Did you know that colon cancer is one of the most aggressive killer disease in the USA that claims thousands of lives each and every year? But what many people don’t know is that this can be prevented by changing lifestyles and regular screening. In fact it has been estimated that one third of the deaths from colon cancer could actually be prevented if people that are over fifty go for regular screening tests and incorporate regular colon cleansing.
Now let us take a closer look at this type of cancer and how it occurs in the colon and rectum. The colon and rectum are part of our digestive system and is a long muscular tube that is called the large intestine.
The first six feet or so of the large intestine is called the colon whilst the rectum covers the last 8 to 10 inches of the large intestine. Sometimes cancer will affect both the rectum and the colon and when this happens it may be called colon-rectal cancer.
The two primary functions of the colon include the maintenance of water in the body and elimination of waste from the body.
Then the other function of the colon is to help the body to absorb healthy nutrients from the food that we eat through the healthy bacteria that live in the colon.
When the diet is low in fibre the colon will find it difficult to eliminate all of the faecal matter from it and this will leave some of the faecal matter to stay stored in the colon.
This leads to accumulation of toxins in the body. This toxic environment in the colon can trigger many health problems among which the most fatal is colon cancer.
Risk Factors of Colon Cancer
The following risk factors can increase the chances of colon cancer in some people.
