Hair Treatment  Natural Hair Treatment

Hello and welcome to JADa Therapy

Today I am going to show you how to use bentonite clay for the hair.

I love using bentonite clay on my hair and have found it a real game changer in many ways.  I have been using bentonite clay for over five years now and I still have a lot more to learn about how truly amazing it is.

If your hair is dry, brittle, breaking and or need an uplift from all the blow drying, hair straigthening then giving it a bentonite treatment could be the anwser to your hair problems.

If your curls aren’t behaving like they use to, then giving your hair a bentonite clay treatment could bring back the life to your curls.

What is Bentonite Clay?

Bentonite clay is a make-up of aged volcanic ash which is also known as ‘Montmorillonite’.  The name comes from one of the largest deposits of bentonite clay which is located in Fort Benton, Montana.

Bentonite clay is an odourless grey or cream in colour and a fine consistency.  What I really like about it is that it is really easy to work with.  When I am mixing it, it works well with my natural recipes.

Bentonite clay contains a high concentration of minerals such as:

  • Iron
  • Potassium
  • Sodium
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Silica

It also absorbs and removes toxins, impurities, heavy metals and chemicals.

Bentonite clay is a common ingredient in many external detox and cleansing products such as:

  • Mud masks
  • Skin care products
  • Poultices
  • Detox baths

It is also used for internal use because of its amazing ability to have an alkalizing effect on the body when taken correctly.  It is really good for bringing balance to the gut bacteria.

Word Of Warning When handling Bentonite Clay

It is important to note that when you are using bentonite clay, you do not let it come into contact with anything metal, because the clay will draw any impurities from it, making it less effective. Always use glass, wooded tools when handling it. If you do not have glass or wooden items then use plastic.

How To Use Bentonite Clay On Your Hair

Bentonite clay as many healing properties for the body, inside and out.  Bentonite clay has and is still being used as treatment for digestive issues when taken internally and for external uses such as, insect bites, cuts, face mask, skin issues and much more.

Bentonite clay is very beneficial for hair care and scalp treatments and can give you a really good deep conditioning by offering deep moisturising to your hair.

It can also help if you have:

  1.  Dry scalp
  2.  Dry and or damaged hair
  3.  Frizziness
  4.  Heat damage
  5.  Lack of shine

Like I have said I have been using bentonite clay for many years now and love it.  These are some of the benefits that I have found using it as part of my hair treatment routine.

  1. De-tangling my hair
  2.  Deep cleansing
  3.  Softer more manageable hair
  4.  Moisturising
  5. Conditioning
  6. Scalp cleansing
  7.  Re-defines my curls

As well as being very moisturising it also draws out excess dirt and oils that can clog up the pores and hair follicles when can prevent hair growth and can cause scalp irritations.

You can use bentonite clay as a shampoo and conditioner in one.

How To Make Your Hair Mask

When it comes to making your very own bentonite clay hair mask, there are many recipes and when you get use to using bentonite clay you may come up with your own unique way of how you chose make yours.

But when starting out I think that it is better to keep it simple, so I will show you some of the recipes that I use with bentonite clay.

I would also like to point out that every time I mix my recipes they rarely come out the same.  This is because the clay swells differently every time.

I would also like to state that I very rarely measure my recipes and when you start making your mixtures you will understand why.  It will also depend on the length of your hair.

Oh I must not forget to tell you that the water I use is either bottled spring water or distilled water but NEVER tap water.  This is because tap water contains a lot of chemicals that may react with the clay.

The Most Popular Bentonite Clay Recipe

  1. Bentonite Clay
  2. Water (bottled or distilled)
  3.  Apple cider vinegar

You could start with

  • 1 cup of bentonite clay
  • ½ cup of apple cider vinegar

Then mix well add a little water until you get a paste consistently.

Now at this stage you can either make your mixture creamy thick or you can make it thinner.

This will depend on how you like to apply it to your hair.

If you make it thinner you can apply it with a bottle applicator.

The bottle applicator will make applying the bentonite clay much easier.

I personally make my mixture when I am going to use it.  It does not take long to make up.  But the clay may continue to swell whilst you are mixing it so do not add anymore clay for your first mixture.

As you get use to mixing bentonite clay you will then get use to how it develops.

Other Bentonite Clay Recipes

  • Bentonite Clay
  • Coconut Milk

I love this recipe and my hair loves it too.  I normally do this treatment every two months.

I would leave this treatment in my hair for 30 minutes to an hour and then follow up with a deep condition for another 30 minutes.  But with this treatment you really do not need to follow up with a deep condition, you can just condition for a few minutes and you are good to go.

Bentonite Clay Shampoo

This is a great shampoo.  I use this for my regular shampoo about twice a month.

I would wet my hair first then add this shampoo and let it sit in my hair for about 10 – 15 minutes before I wash it out.  Then I would follow up with deep conditioning.

Just Bentonite Clay and Water

I do this treatment when my hair needs a good detox.  I will do this say every three to four months.  I will leave this treatment in my hair for an hour and sometimes longer and then wash out and do my deep conditioning for about 30 minutes.

With all these recipes you can also use as face masks which will do wonders for your skin.  I often use as face mask the same time that I am do the treatments.

Are There Side Effects Of Using Bentonite Clay?

Bentonite clay is a natural product and I have not seen any research stating any side effects from using it.  But in say that you should always do a patch test when using anything new, so that you can see how it will react with you and your skin.

If you have a sensitive scalp you should test on a small area and see how your scalp reacts over the say 24 hours before doing a full treatment.
