Benefits of Bladderwrack for the Thyroid

Disclaimer

I am not medically trained and I am not a scientist.  I have done a lot of research over the years since I started living with a thyroid conditions and was amazed to find out that I did not need to have the radiation treatment that I had.

The radiation treatment only traded one thyroid condition for another.  I was first diagnosed with overactive thyroid and after the treatment I then had underactive thyroid condition.

Only to find out during my research that it is easier to control an underactive thyroid, medically.

So I am sharing the methods that I use to help to reduce my synthetic medication.  My goal is to totally come off this medication by getting it reduced until it cannot be reduced anymore and I am totally off them.

Then I would have reached my ultimate goal of healing my thyroid. YAY.

What is Bladderwrack?

Bladderwrack is a seaweed

Scientific name:  Fucus Vesiculosus

Other names that bladder wrack is known by:

  • Black tang
  • Rockweed
  • Bladder fucus
  • Sea Oak
  • Black tany
  • Cut weed
  • Dryers fucus
  • Red fucus
  • Red Wrack

These seaweed’s are found on the coasts of the North Sea, the Western Baltic Sea, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Bladderwrack is the original source of iodine and it was discovered in the 1811.  It was used extensively to treat goitre, which is the swelling of the thyroid gland and is also related to iodine deficiency.

Benefits of Bladderwrack for the Thyroid

Bladderwrack is an herb that used for people with hypothyroidism also known as underactive thyroid.

When you take this herb along with other herbs and supplements and a change in lifestyle, can help restore the health of someone living with hypothyroidism.

This is great news because, this means that for many people who have been taking synthetic and or natural thyroid hormone may eventually be able to stop taking these drugs, with the help of this herb. (Under the supervision of their medical doctor).

When Bladderwrack is combinded with another herb called Ashwagandha, which can stimulate the production of the thyroid hormone in some people with hypothyroid conditions.

I am not saying that you should stop taking your medications and replace it these herbs.

How I take Bladderwrack and Ashwagandha

When I first started taking bladderwrack and Ashwagandha in 2013, I would add the power form to a protein smoothie.

Now I have got into making tinctures and find them more convenient to take and I can travel anywhere with my little bottles of tinctures and find it amazing that I can get the same affects from a few drops under my tongue twice a day.  Morning and evening.

I still drink my protein smoothies and add bladderwrack and Ashwagandha powder to them from time to time.  But on the days that I add the powders I do not take my tincture drops because that would be doubling up and we do not want to do that.

I will be getting more into making tinctures in future blog posts.

Bladderwrack contains iodine and for this reason some people with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis don’t do so well taking this herb.  In saying that some people don’t have a problem.

The reason why some people with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis may avoid taking this herb is because they may fear it will exacerbate their condition.  If this is you then I would suggest doing more research.

Please take note:

However for pregnant women and those breastfeeding I would not suggest taking this herb.

Benefits of Ashwagandha for the Thyroid

Ashwagandha has many benefits and one of them is that it will help the body to cope with stress.  Another is that it is great for the immune system and is anti-inflammatory.

You can find out more about the benefits here.
