I love using coconut oil on my hair and have had really good results, I have many different ways that I use it which I will be mentioning in this article.
I would also like to mention at this point that Coconut oil has amazing health benefits which I will focus on in another article.
Firstly I would like to mention that if your hair is dry and brittle, one of the reasons could be that you are not drinking enough fresh water. Which will keep your entire body hydrated and if your whole body is hydrated your hair will be also.
The reason why I mention this is because when I speak to many people with hair challenges the answer is almost always that they are not drinking enough fresh water and this is the first thing that needs to be on point if you want to have healthier hair.

Coconut oil is beneficial for hair because it is
- Rich in antioxidants
- Adds volume and shine to hair

- Anti-fungal
- Antibacterial
- Fights infections
Coconut oil is a really good hair and scalp treatment because it is rich in antioxidants, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial. With all this goodness on your hair improving your scalp health by fighting infections and fungus that can prevent healthy hair growth.
Many hair products today contain coconut oil but unfortunately they also contain other harmful ingredients. Along with that the amount of coconut oil contained in these products just is not enough to benefit your hair in the long term. Coconut oil can also be used by the whole family.
There are a lot more natural hair care products around now and this is a good thing, but many people are confused as to which one of these products are best for their hair.
Personally many of the products that I use in my hair are one ingredient products, such as coconut oil. The reason for this is because I like to mix my own hair treatments and like to keep it simple.

Different Ways to Use Coconut Oil on Your hair and Scalp
Coconut Oil as a Condition
Coconut oil is a brilliant conditioner for all hair types. It will help with dryness and breakage and this is because coconut oil actually penetrates the hair shaft, which help to rebuild the hair with vitamins, minerals and medium-chain fatty acids making your hair stronger and longer.
Coconut oil will also help prevent damage from combing and brushing.
You can use it as an intensive conditioner
- ¼ teaspoon thinner hair to ½ tablespoon for thicker hair (adjust to length)
- Wash out and style as usual
- Smooth through hair a section at a time
- Pay attention to the ends of your hair
- Leave it in your hair for 1 hour – overnight
- Cover with a shower cap for heat for deeper penetration or use a floor standing hair dryer
- Wash out with gentle mild natural shampoo
- Deep condition for 15 -30mins
This is a simple intensive conditioner but very effective. I am from the school of thought that if you really want to know how a natural product like Coconut oil works, you need to see how it works on its own. So try this for about three months and then you will really know how good a conditioner really is.
I always deep condition after any treatment, because I give my hair the full works every wash day. You do not have to, you can just condition your hair normally.
You can use it as a leave-in hair conditioner, a little goes a long way so you can find the right amount to use on your hair. It is also safe to use on children.

Coconut oil as a Scalp Massage
You can use coconut oil on your scalp to promote hair growth.
By gently massaging the coconut oil into your scalp for about 5 to 10 minutes per session it will help to improve circulations which will support hair growth. This can be done 3 to 4 times a week.

Coconut oil for Dandruff
Coconut oil is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial so it is brilliant for your scalp and treating dandruff and it is a natural product and chemical free.
Unfortunately many of the over the counter products are full of chemicals. Just look at the ingredients, it is filled with long words, you need a dictionary to really understand what they mean. Many commercial shampoos that are made for dandruff are very stripping to the hair. So you have a clear scalp and damaged hair.
To Treat Dandruff
- Wash hair with a natural gentle shampoo
- Style as usual
- Pat dry hair until damp
- Coconut oil – 2 teaspoons
- Essential oil – lavender / tee tree / rosemary (choose one or combination) 5 drops
- Apply to scalp
- Cover with a shower cap 30 mins to 1 hours (you can use freestanding hair dryer)
- Wash out with conditioner of your choice
Coconut oil can also tame frizzy hair, protect hair from the sun because like skin, hair can get damaged in the sun.

Coconut Oil to Detangle Your Hair
I use to find detangling my hair a chore and something I really did not look forward to, until I discovered detangling with coconut oil.
Detangling your hair can cause breakage, but using coconut oil helps by coating the hair and making it easier to remove knots.
You can detangle with dry hair or wet hair. I prefer my hair to be damp and then I add a fair amount of coconut oil to completely coat my hair and then I detangle. It is a breeze doing it this way and saves a lot of time.
When detangling your hair, you do not need to apply coconut oil to your scalp, just apply to hair.
