Rice Water and Hair Growth
Did you know that rice water is really good for hair growth. I have been using rice water for over three years now and love it. So I thought I would share my experience with you.
Firstly lets get into the history and where this use of Rice Water Rinse actually came from.
The History
Where did it come from?
A village in China called Huangluo, which is popularly known “the land of Rapunzels”. A tribe called Red Yao.
The women of this village use rice water to wash and nourish their hair. They can also be found in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “world longest hair village”.
There is also record of the noble women of the Japanese Imperial Court in 800AD, known to have long beautiful hair which they also washed in rice water.
This tradition has been passed down through the generations.
Today these practices are being used all over the world.
I understand that using Rice Water on Hair is still a new thing for many people today and this is the main reason why I am writing this article.
I am also going to answer some commonly asked questions.
How Can I make Rice Water?
There are quite a few ways of making Rice water. I am going to show you how I make it.
First I want to say that there are many types of rice out there on the market. So what I say to people is to start with what you have.
The best Rice is always going to Organic. If you do not have Organic Rice. Please do not feel that you have to go out and purchase it for this project. Start with what you have.
First Way to Make Rice Water
Things you will need.
Rice of your choice. Half a cup.
Bottled water.
I use bottled water because it better than using tap water. (if you do not have bottled water, then boil your water and let it cool).
Wash the Rice to remove any dirt and impurities.
Then add 500ml bottled water to rice and stir a little and leave it overnight at room temperature.
The next day
Strain the water from the rice and it is ready to use.
Before using wash your hair in the usual way and then you can either spray the rice water on to hair or pour it on to your hair.
I have done both. It is a personal preference. I prefer to spray because then I can get to my scalp easier.
How do I use Rice water?
After you have put the rice water on to your hair, massage it into your scalp gently and then you can then put on a shower cap and leave in hair for anything from 15 minutes to an hour.
Then Rinse rice water out and deep condition and you are good to go.
The Second way to make Rice water
The second way to make rice water is the same as the first way. The only difference is that instead of leaving it overnight, you are going to leave it for a couple of days at room temperature. The Rice Water will become fermented and some say you need to dilute it before using it. Personally I have never diluted that. But if you are new to this, I would recommend that you dilute the rice water before using it. You could add half a cup of water before use.
This is known as Fermented rice Water.
The routine for use is the same as above.
The Third way to make Rice Water
The third way to make rice water is to follow the instructions of the first example.
The only difference is that you are only going to leave the rice water for about 30 minutes to an hour at room temperature and then use.
How Do I Use Rice Water?
I can honestly say that I have used Rice water, in all the ways above. I have no special way to use rice water, it just depends on what I am doing from week to week and how busy I am.
I will say that leaving the Rice water for a couple of days makes my hair feels stronger instantly.
Leaving the rice water overnight is what I do most and find that I get a silkier feel and look.
I have been doing the Rice Water rinse for just over two years and will be keeping it in my routine because I love the results.
Is Rice Water Good for My Hair?
Rice Water in my opinion is very good for hair. I have noticed that I have more hair growing out of my scalp after using rice water.
What is the Ratio of Water to Rice?
The easier way to measure the ratio of water to rice is, one part rice to two parts water.
How Long do I Leave Rice Water in My hair?
You can leave rice water on your hair from 15 minutes to an hour.
Rice Water is a natural product and if you left it on your hair for a few hours you should be fine. I have left rice water on my hair for up to three hours because I was doing other things and everything was fine.
Is Rice Water Good For Hair Growth?
Rice water is brilliant for hair growth. I have noticed not only longer hair but healthier hair. I found that it improved my hair growth.
Rice Water contains vitamins and minerals. And contains inositol, which is a carbohydrate that helps strengthen elasticity and reduces surface friction.
Rice water also helps with hair fall. The amino acids present in rice water helps in the regeneration of hair and aid in faster hair growth.
Do you rinse Rice Water out of the Hair?
As a rule I would wash the rice water out of my hair. Because it is a treatment and it is still working days after I have washed it out.
Can Rice Water Work on 4c Hair?
Definitely. It is brilliant for all hair types.
I have a mixture of the 4a, 4b, 4c hair. And I love what rice water is doing for my hair.
Rice Water for Relaxed Hair?
Rice water is good for relaxed hair. As mentioned earlier it is good for all hair types.

I loved it the article itself was very informative the title itself made me want to read more. The only thing I can say is there wasn’t many images or pictures. However, the article was interesting and great website.
Thank you so much for your comments and feedback. I am working on the images.
This is a very interesting article. I have never heard of using rice water as a hair treatment, but it makes sense. Organic treatments for hair and skin always seems the best option.
I will give it a try.
Thanks Coucka
Brilliant, thank you for your comments. Let me know how you get with the rice water when you try it.
Excellent information. Is it mainly for growing hair length or can it help with thinning hair as well? I have hormonal issues that cause my hair to be super fine and very little of it left. When I was a child it was so thick pulling it up in an up do caused headaches. Such a loss. Thank you for this information. Maryann
Hi Maryann, You could still use it on your hair and it should thicken the hair. There have been reports that hair growth has been gained with rice water. I have noticed my mother hair becoming thicker with the use of rice water. I will be doing another article on Fengreek seed, which is really good at thickening the actual hair shaft. Give the Rice water a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Please let me know how you get on.
Hi Jennifer,
This was an interesting article, you never know what your going to stumble across sometimes :). I had never heard of rice water prior to this nor of any of the benefits. I will say I love rice!!! It is tasty!
I like the feel of your website, the purple color is comforting and soothing. It made me feel relaxed. Your article was informative and like how it didn’t just tell me the benefits or history behind rice water but actually how to make it! I would like to have known more of why rice water is actually good for my hair. The science behind it.
I would add some more images to break things up and let the readers flow with the article more easily. There are also a few typos but I get that as well (I am no English major lol).
Hope this helps and blessings to you and your website!
Jesse
Hi Jesse,
Thank you so much for your feedback, I really appreciate it. I will be adding my own pictures shortly. I should have taken them before but I am still new at this. I wanted to write from my own experience and how I use rice water and what it has done form my hair. But I understand that the science behind it is also important.
Thank you again
Jennifer
Interesting article. I eat rice daily but never use the water. This is a great way to use that water instead of going down the drain. Thanks for sharing!
